研究を「形」にするのは、ひとりではない—読売新聞に掲載された「VR・メタバースで命を守り、支える」研究と、それを支える人たちのこと

このたび、岡山大学大学院保健学域看護学分野・森恵子教授と白獅子の共同研究「VR・メタバースで命を守り、支える」について、読売新聞様に取り上げていただきました。

この研究は、看護学の知見とXR（VR・AR・メタバース）技術を組み合わせ、二つの社会課題に向き合うものです。

  • 「生き残る力」を育てるVR——看護学生や高齢者を含む一般市民が、土砂災害・洪水・地震・火災といった災害現場を仮想空間で疑似体験し、「知識として知っている」を「体が動く」へ変えていくプログラムの開発

  • 「支え合う力」をつくるメタバース——食道がん術後患者さんをはじめ、地理的・時間的な制約を超えて、同じ経験を持つ人同士がアバターで匿名につながれる患者支援の場の構築


紙面では、研究を代表して森恵子教授と、白獅子から代表の春名が写真とともに紹介されています。取り上げていただいたことに、心より御礼申し上げます。

そして今日は、その紙面には収まりきらなかった話を、少しさせてください。

一枚の写真の向こう側に、たくさんの人がいます

新聞記事という限られた紙面では、どうしても「研究代表者」として一人、「企業代表」として一人、という形で紹介されることになります。 けれども、この研究は決して代表者たちだけで進めているものではありません。

森教授の研究室では、共同研究者の皆さま—大学院生の方々、看護師をはじめとする臨床の専門家の方々が、それぞれの専門性を持ち寄って研究を支えてくださっています。

看護学生・市民への災害体験VRのインタビュー調査、メタバース患者会の対象となる食道がん術後患者さんのケアに関する知見、研究計画の精緻化、倫理審査の整備—どれ一つとして、研究室メンバーの皆さまの存在なしには成り立ちません。


白獅子の側でも同じです。CGコンテンツの開発を担う開発クリエイター、XR体験を設計するデザイナー、メタバース空間を構築するエンジニア、そして契約・経理・広報など総務的な業務でプロジェクトを支えるスタッフがいます。


表に出る機会は多くありませんが、研究を「形」にして社会に届けるためには、この一人ひとりの重要な仕事は絶対に欠かせません。


「VRで災害を疑似体験する」という一行の裏には、災害現象を3DCGで再現する技術者の手があります。

「メタバースで患者さんがつながる」という一行の裏には、安心して入っていける空間とアバターを設計するデザイナーの手があります。

そしてそれらの仕事が滞りなく回るように、契約書や仕様書、設計図を整え、経理を回し、社内外のやり取りを支えるスタッフがいます。


この専門家の皆さんは、それぞれ写真に写る事は少ないのですが、この研究においても本当に多くの人が関わっています。 研究を「形」にするのは、ひとりではない—今日はそのことを、まず最初にお伝えしたいと思います。

私たちが目指しているのは、「社会実装」です

3月の記事（XR / メタバースで「生き残る力」と「支え合う力」を届ける）でもお伝えしたとおり、今研究の学術的設計、倫理審査、医療・看護面の監修は、すべて岡山大学が担います。 白獅子が担うのは、その「体験を届けるための器」をXR/3DCGの技術で開発すること—そして、研究室に閉じた成果で終わらせず、実際に社会のなかで使われる形にまで届けることです。

私たちが研究支援を通して行いたいのは、社会実装です。 そこに至るまでの技術的支援を、XRと3DCGの技術を用いて行い、提案し、形にする—これが白獅子の役割だと考えています。

今回の研究で言えば、VR教材と教育プログラムの完成、メタバース患者支援の実運用、そして将来的にはインドネシア・フィリピンといった国際展開まで—研究の出口を見据えながら、技術パートナーとして伴走していきます。

EN On Being Featured in The Yomiuri Shimbun, the "Protecting and Supporting Lives Through VR and the Metaverse" Research, and the People Who Make It Possible Featured in The Yomiuri Shimbun

Our collaborative research with Professor Keiko Mori of the Graduate School of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing, Okayama University — "Protecting and Supporting Lives Through VR and the Metaverse" — has been featured in The Yomiuri Shimbun (Okayama edition).

This research brings together nursing science and XR technologies (VR, AR, and the metaverse) to address two pressing social challenges:

  • Building the "Power to Survive" through VR — A program development effort aimed at helping nursing students and the general public, including older adults, move from "knowing about disasters" to "being able to act" by experiencing landslides, flooding, earthquakes, and fires in immersive virtual environments.

  • Building the "Power to Support Each Other" through the Metaverse — Beginning with patients recovering from esophageal cancer surgery, we are creating a metaverse-based patient community where people who share similar experiences can connect anonymously through avatars, free from the constraints of geography and time.

The newspaper feature introduces Professor Keiko Mori as the lead researcher and Haruna, representing Snowlion.Inc, with their photographs. We are deeply grateful for the recognition.

And today, we would like to share a little of what could not fit within the limits of a newspaper page.

Beyond the Photograph, There Are Many People

Newspaper coverage, by the nature of its format, tends to introduce a single "lead researcher" and a single "company representative." But this research is by no means being carried out by these two individuals alone.

In Professor Mori's laboratory, our collaborating researchers — graduate students and clinical specialists including nurses — each bring their expertise to support this work. Interview-based research with nursing students and citizens following VR disaster experiences, clinical knowledge of post-surgery care for esophageal cancer patients (the focus of the metaverse patient community), refinement of the research design, and preparation for ethical review — not one of these would be possible without the members of the laboratory.

The same is true on the Snowlion.Inc side. We have development creators who build CG content, designers who shape XR experiences, engineers who construct metaverse environments, and staff who support the project through administrative work such as contracts, accounting, and public relations. They rarely appear in the spotlight, but every one of these roles is absolutely essential to turning research into a form that reaches society.

Behind the single line "experiencing a disaster through VR" are the hands of technical specialists who recreate disaster phenomena in 3DCG. Behind the line "patients connecting through the metaverse" are the hands of designers who craft spaces and avatars that feel safe to step into. And so that all of this work can move forward without friction, there are staff members who prepare contracts, specifications, and design documents, manage accounting, and handle communication inside and outside the company.

These specialists rarely appear in photographs, yet many, many people are involved in this research. Bringing research to life is never a solo effort — that is what we wanted to share, first of all, today.

What We Are Working Toward Is Real-World Implementation

As we shared in our March post (Delivering the Power to Survive and the Power to Support Each Other Through XR and the Metaverse), the academic design of this research, the ethical review processes, and all medical and nursing supervision are handled entirely by Okayama University. Snowlion.Inc's role is to develop the "vessel through which the experience is delivered" using XR and 3DCG technologies — and to ensure that the outcomes do not stay confined to the laboratory, but reach a form that is actually used in society.

What we hope to achieve through research support is real-world implementation. Providing the technical support that leads to it — through XR and 3DCG, proposing, shaping, and giving form to ideas — this is the role we believe Snowlion.Inc is meant to play.

For this particular research, that means completing the VR teaching materials and educational programs, launching the operational phase of the metaverse patient support community, and looking ahead to international expansion in countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines. We will continue as a technology partner, walking alongside the research with its real-world destination in view.
