「なぜ」を、封じない。─白獅子の研究支援について

白獅子には、変えられない一つの考えがあります。
理由を語らずに、ルールを禁止事項として押しつけるのではなく、なぜそうするのかを共有してから、一緒に進める。
私たちの事業も、研究者との組み方も、すべてここから出発しています。
おそらく、いちばん消耗するところの一つ
優れた研究者ほど、「なぜ」を手放さない方が多いと、私たちは感じています。
既存の枠を疑い、理由から考える。
研究という営みそのものが、「みんながそう言っているから」を疑うところから始まるからでしょう。
だからこそ、そうした方々が、ものづくりの現場で消耗する場面を、私たちは何度も見てきました。
見積もりや仕様が、あとから少しずつ動いていく。
「弊社の規定では」の一言で、研究の中身より手続きが先に立つ。
科研費や補助金の、年度や費目の都合が、なかなか理解されない。
研究の厳密さより、納品物の見栄えが優先される。
担当者が変わるたびに、意図を最初から説明し直す。
一つ一つは小さなことです。
けれど積み重なると、研究者は、本来向き合うべき研究そのものから、少しずつ引き剥がされていきます。
理由を語らずに従わせようとする力が、ここにも働いている。
私たちには、そう見えることがあります。
「自由」だけでは、足りない
では、ルールがなければいいのか。自由なら研究者は喜ぶのか。そう単純ではない、というのが私たちの実感です。
研究には、厳密さが必要です。 公的研究費を扱うなら、その適正な管理は絶対で、いい加減さは許されません。
研究倫理も同じです。
自由と引き換えにここが緩む相手とは、研究者はそもそも組めません。
白獅子が目指しているのは、「自由だが、いい加減ではない」という一点です。
公的研究費の管理も、研究倫理への対応も、きちんと行う。
そのうえで、「なぜそうするのか」を省かない。
厳密さがあるからこそ、研究者は安心して、自由に発想できる。
この両立こそが、研究支援の本質だと、私たちは考えています。
支える側の系譜に、連なること
誤解のないように書いておくと、これは大企業を否定する話ではありません。
たとえば島津製作所のように、研究者を支えることに徹してきた企業に、私たちは深い敬意を抱いています。
優れた計測機器が、どれだけの研究を前に進めてきたか。
研究者の隣に立ち、その仕事を支えてきた企業の系譜は、確かに存在します。
白獅子が連なりたいのは、その系譜です。ハードウェアではなく、XRと3DCGという手段で。
「伝わらない専門知」を、見て、触れて、体験できる形に変える、届ける。 研究者の「なぜ」と「本当はこうあってほしい」に、技術で応える。
それが、白獅子にできる支え方だと考えています。
岡山大学や京都大学との共同開発をはじめ、医療・防災・工学など多くの分野で、研究者の皆様とともに社会実装を進めてきました。
そのすべてに、この考えが通っています。
命令ではなく、本人が動く
白獅子が作るVR/ARは、と命令して人を動かすものではありません。
体験を通して、本人が自分で「改善しよう」と思う。
外から従わせるのではなく、その人自身の判断を引き出す。
研究者との組み方も、同じでありたいと考えています。
こちらの枠にはめ込むのではなく、研究者の方がご自分の意志で、いちばんいい研究に向かえるように支える。
理由を語らずにルールを提示することに、白獅子はずっと違和感を持ってきました。
だからこそ、研究者の方と組むときには、その「なぜ」を封じない。 問いを、誠心誠意に受け止める。

We do not impose rules as a list of prohibitions without explanation. We share the reasons first, and then move forward together. Everything we do — our business, and the way we work with researchers — begins here.
Perhaps one of the places where researchers are worn down the most
The finest researchers, we have come to feel, are those who never let go of the question "why." They doubt the existing frame and think from first principles. This is likely because research itself begins by questioning what "everyone says to be true."
For that very reason, we have witnessed, again and again, moments where such people are worn down in the field of production.
Estimates and specifications that shift, little by little, after the fact. The phrase "as per our regulations," placing procedure ahead of the substance of the research. The realities of Kakenhi and public grants — fiscal years, budget categories — that are rarely understood. Appearance of the deliverable prized over the rigor of the research. Having to explain one's intent from scratch each time the person in charge is replaced.
Each of these is a small thing. Yet as they accumulate, researchers are gradually pried away from the very research they should be facing. A force that seeks to make people comply without giving reasons is at work here too. At least, that is how it sometimes appears to us.
"Freedom" alone is not enough
So, is it enough simply to have no rules? Would researchers be glad if everything were free? It is not that simple — that is our honest sense of it.
Research demands rigor. When public research funds are involved, their proper management is absolute, and carelessness cannot be permitted. The same is true of research ethics. With a partner who loosens here in exchange for freedom, researchers cannot work in the first place.
What Snowlion aims for is a single point: "free, but never careless."
We handle the management of public research funds, and our response to research ethics, properly. And upon that foundation, we do not omit the "why." Precisely because there is rigor, researchers can feel secure and think freely. This coexistence, we believe, is the essence of research support.
To belong to the lineage of those who support
To avoid any misunderstanding: this is not a story about denying large corporations.
For companies that have devoted themselves to supporting researchers — Shimadzu Corporation, for one — we hold deep respect. How many advances in research have fine measuring instruments carried forward? The lineage of companies that stand beside researchers and support their work truly exists.
The lineage Snowlion wishes to join is that one — not through hardware, but through the means of XR and 3DCG.
To transform "specialized knowledge that does not carry across" into something one can see, touch, and experience — and deliver it. To answer, with technology, the researcher's "why" and their "how it ought to be." That, we believe, is the support Snowlion can offer.
Beginning with joint development alongside Okayama University and Kyoto University, we have advanced social implementation together with researchers across many fields — medicine, disaster prevention, engineering. This same conviction runs through all of it.
Not command, but the person moving of their own accord
The VR/AR that Snowlion creates does not move people by command. Through experience, a person comes to think, of their own accord, "I want to improve this." Rather than compelling from without, it draws out that person's own judgment.
We wish to be the same in how we work with researchers. Rather than forcing them into our frame, we support researchers so that they can move, by their own will, toward the very best research.
Snowlion has always felt a discomfort with presenting rules without giving reasons. That is exactly why, when we work with researchers, we do not silence their "why." We receive their questions wholeheartedly.
