EN Title: Family-Centered Community Disaster Preparedness — Exhibiting "Disaster Experience VR," "Infection Control VR," and "Cat Café VR" at Ehime Medical Center On Sunday, October 19, 2025, Snowlion Inc. exhibited "Disaster Experience VR," "Infection Control VR," and "Cat Café VR" at the "Ehime Tsunagaru Project Family Gathering" held at the former Nursing School building of Ehime Medical Center (approximately 6 minutes by car from Toon IC or Kawauchi IC). The venue was prepared as a safe space for families of children and adults requiring medical care and those with severe physical and intellectual disabilities, and was held in conjunction with networking sessions, disaster preparedness programs, and hands-on activities.
Event Overview
Date & Time: Sunday, October 19, 2025, from 1:30 PM
Venue: Ehime Medical Center
Host & Organizer: Ehime Association for Children and Adults with Severe Physical and Intellectual Disabilities / Ehime Family Association for Children and Adults Requiring Medical Care "Move On Ehime Net"
Cooperation: Ehime Medical Center and others (Programs included networking sessions, disaster preparedness learning and exhibits, medical center tours, and family-friendly experiential content)
The Significance of Ehime Medical Center as a Venue
This event was designed with the purpose of allowing individuals and their families to "gather, learn, and connect with peace of mind." Leveraging the unique setting within the grounds of Ehime Medical Center, a practical space was created where healthcare, welfare, and disaster preparedness intersect, under the supervision and information provision of specialized professionals. It was also impressive that the family association took the initiative in organizing the flow of interaction and learning, with well-planned time allocations that were easy to navigate and a design that allowed families to "leave without stress."
Purpose of the Exhibited Content
Disaster Experience VR A VR experience designed to help participants "personalize" earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, fires, and other disasters that could actually occur in their community in a short time. Rather than presenting fear, we emphasized creating opportunities for dialogue that lead to "family consensus-building (where and how to evacuate / who carries what)," and after the experience, we encourage the establishment of behavioral changes.
Infection Control VR Themed around the importance of hand hygiene and environmental cleaning, and the visualization of pathogen spread, this content is structured to help participants intuitively understand "where attention is needed" in healthcare, nursing care, and home life settings. The exhibit was designed so that families could take home hints for improving care workflows and reconsidering the placement of supplies at home.
Cat Café VR Our relaxation-focused content that "creates a 'comforting' breathing space in otherwise tense environments." The experience of spending time with cats from their perspective naturally draws out family conversations and serves to soften the overall atmosphere of the venue. We observed many children removing their headsets with smiles, confirming the effect of lowering the psychological barrier to VR experiences.
Questions for Family Discussion
Where to evacuate in an emergency (options for home, car, or nearby facilities and evacuation routes)
Who is responsible for what (medical care, communication, items to take, sibling supervision)
What to prepare in daily life (stockpiles, contact lists, home workflow and hygiene improvements)
At the venue, disaster preparedness exhibits including preparations for sleeping in vehicles were also conducted, providing a good opportunity for families to concretize "how to use familiar tools" as a family unit.
Event Flow and Safety-Conscious Design
The schedule was organized so that networking, learning, and hands-on activities did not overlap too much, with professional consultation corners and indoor/outdoor experience spaces appropriately arranged. The operational decision to allow free departure after 3:00 PM according to individual health conditions and schedules also contributed to reducing the burden on families.
From "Experience" to "Habit"
We constantly refine VR not as mere surprise or entertainment, but as an educational tool that connects "experience → awareness → action → habituation." In this exhibit as well, we prepared checklist items for families to confirm immediately after the experience and materials they could take home to continue, supporting "sustainable disaster preparedness" in the community. Moving forward, we will continue to collaborate with healthcare, welfare, and educational settings to cultivate a "culture of preparedness" together with community members.
